CAT4 score checker

Type in the four Standard Age Scores (SAS) from your child's CAT4 report. You'll see what each one means, your child's verbal/spatial profile, and where practice will help most.

Use the SAS column, not the stanine or percentile. Missing one? Leave it blank; the profile needs verbal and spatial.

How the checker works

It applies the rules GL Assessment publishes for CAT4 reports [1] [2]:

  • Stanines come from GL's table: 89–96 is stanine 4, 97–103 stanine 5, 104–111 stanine 6, and so on. Stanines 4–6 are average.
  • The profile compares the verbal and spatial stanines. Less than two apart is no bias; two apart is mild, three moderate, and four or more extreme.
  • Small gaps don't mean much. GL puts a typical ±5 point confidence band around each score.

Questions parents ask

Where do I find my child's CAT4 scores?

On the CAT4 report from school. Each of the four areas (verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial) has a Standard Age Score, usually shown as "SAS" next to a stanine ("ST") and a national percentile rank ("NPR"). Enter the four SAS numbers.

Is a verbal or spatial bias a problem?

No. It describes a relative strength, not a level of ability. GL Assessment, which publishes CAT4, says profiles are not fixed: children who take CAT4 twice, two years apart, often move to a less extreme profile.

Why might the verbal score be lower for a child who speaks other languages?

The verbal tests depend on reading English. GL Assessment's guidance says that for a child who isn't yet fluent in reading English, the average of the other three scores can say more about their reasoning than the overall mean.

Is this the same as the school's report?

It uses the same published rules for stanines and profiles, so it should match. The percentiles here are close estimates; the report's own percentile ranks are exact. Edzuno is independent and not affiliated with GL Assessment.
