What is non-verbal reasoning?

It's reasoning with shapes and patterns instead of words or numbers. GL Assessment describes it as mainly reasoning with abstract figures: spotting relationships and sequences, finding the features a set of figures share and applying them to a new one, and, in some question types, matching features of shapes to letter codes. [1]

What the test looks like

  • Multiple choice, answered on a separate sheet in pencil, because it's marked by computer. Mistakes must be rubbed out, not crossed out. [1]
  • GL's familiarisation papers have four sections of 20 questions, and GL suggests about 10 minutes per section. [1]
  • Tests vary by area. Timings, question counts and even subjects differ, so check with your local admissions authority. [2]

Try one: codes

Each figure has a code. Work out what each letter stands for. Which code goes with the figure on the right?

Answer: E The first letter stands for how many shapes there are (P = 3 shapes, L = 1 shape). The second letter stands for the shading (S = grey, V = white, T = black). The new figure shows a white pentagon, so its code is LV. The shape changes too, but it isn't part of the code.
