How these questions work

Your child sees a shape and picks the option that's the same shape rotated. The other options are mirror images or slightly different shapes, which is what makes it tricky.

Worked example

Answer: C The right answer is the shape turned a quarter turn clockwise. The others are mirror images (flipped over). Tip: pick one square that sticks out and follow where it goes as the shape turns.

Tips

  • Pick one distinctive corner or feature and follow where it goes as the shape turns.
  • A mirror image can never be made by turning. If the shape has been flipped, rule it out.
  • Practise with real objects: turn a book or a toy a quarter turn and watch the corners.

The usual trap: A mirror image, which looks right at a glance but can only be made by flipping.
