How these questions work
A row of figures changes step by step: something turns, moves round, changes shading, or gains or loses items. Your child works out the pattern and picks the figure that continues it.
Worked example
Which figure comes next in the series?
Show answer
Answer: E The shape turns a quarter turn anticlockwise each time. The dot moves one corner clockwise each time. So the next figure is a white arrow with the dot in its new place.
Tips
- Track one element at a time across the whole row before looking at the options.
- Say each step in words: "it turns a quarter turn clockwise each time".
- Check the answer against every step in the row, not just the last one.
The usual trap: An option that's right for one changing element but wrong for another.
