How these questions work

A grid of figures has one empty square. Patterns run across the rows and down the columns. Your child works out both and picks the figure that fits the gap.

Worked example

Which figure completes the grid?

A
B
C
D
E
Show answer

Answer: A Every figure in a row has the same colour (rows from top: white, grey, black). Every figure in a column has the same shape (columns from left: stars, squares, pentagons). So the missing figure is a black pentagon.

Tips

  • Look along the rows first, then down the columns. The answer must fit both.
  • Often each row has the same set of shapes or shadings, just in a different order.
  • Count things in each square: the number of items often changes in steps.

The usual trap: An option that fits the row but not the column, or the other way round.
