What to expect in Year 3

For many children Year 3 is their first CAT4. GL recommends Pre-A or Level Y here, which are designed for younger children and can look a little different from Level A onwards. Our Years 2–3 practice level is pitched for this age, with simpler shapes, smaller numbers and everyday words. Start untimed and go through the explanations together.

CAT4 has four areas, each with two question types: non-verbal, verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning. It isn't a test of what's been taught in class, so there's nothing to revise, but knowing the question types makes a real difference to confidence.

Questions parents ask about Year 3

Which CAT4 level does Year 3 sit?

Yes. British Year 3 is the same as Grade 2 in American, IB and many UAE schools. Children of the same age are in both.

Use our free practice at Grades 1–2 level (Years 2–3): short sets of 10 fresh questions for each of the eight CAT4 question types, a printable mixed paper, and a free 20-minute practice test. Little and often works best.
